Abstract

PURPOSE: To enable the formation of a polyethylene sheathing layer having an uniform thickness, by a method wherein a half-molten polyethylene sheet is wound spirally around an outer circumferential surface of a heated steel pipe through the medium of an adhesive, and the resultant work is cooled in a specified condition by feeding a coolant to an internal and an external surface thereof.
CONSTITUTION: A steel pipe 1 to be sheathed is previously heated to 150W250°C, while the adhesive is coated on an outer circumferential surface thereof. A half- molten or softened polyethylene sheet 2, which is extruded through a T die 6 at a discharging temperature of 150W300°C, is wound for covering spirally around the steel pipe 1 with a part of the sheet 2 being overlapped on another successively along the pipe. A coolant is then fed to an outer surface 4 of a polyethylene sheathing layer 3 and to an inner surface 5 of the steel pipe 1 to be sheathed, a temperature of the outer surface layer of the sheathing layer being made to remain lower than that of a innermost circumference layer of the sheathing layer 3 until the whole of the sheathing layer 3 is solidfied. Besides, cooling takes place so that the innermost circumference layer of the sheathing layer 3 can be cooled at a cooling rate 10°C per minute at the least.
