Abstract

PURPOSE: To improve a steel article in resistance to corrosion caused by sea water, splashes or the rise and fall of the tide, by coating the steel article with anticorrosion primer layers, the first of which is a zinc rich paint and the second of which is a manganese rich paint.
CONSTITUTION: In order to improve the corrosion resistance, caused by sea water, splashing or the rise and fall of the tide, of a steel article to be used in a marine atmosphere, the steel article is pretreated by shot or sand blasting, coated with an inorganic zinc rich paint of 20W50μm thickness by air spraying or the like, and further coated with an inorganic manganese rich paint of 50W100μm thickness. These two layers are used as under-coats. The steel article is then coated with an anticorrosion upper-coat layer, e.g. an epoxy or urethane paint. Due to the adoption of the special under-coat layers, the adhesiveness of the upper-coat layer onto the under-coat layer is excellent. Consequently, the resistance of the steel article to corrosion caused by sea water, splashing or the rise and fall of the tide is enhanced.
