Abstract

PURPOSE: To make it possible to perfrom efficient welding without lowering commutating current, by using a square wave power source and by controllig the output through the DC voltage of power rectifying part during flash period, and through the pulse width of power inverting part during upset period.
CONSTITUTION: In the flash butt welding, a square wave power source composed of power rectifying part 1, DC filter 2 and power inverting part 3 is used. During the flash period, the DC current of power rectifying part 1 is controlled, and operation is made with an output of relatively high voltage and low current. During the upset period, the pulse width of power inverting part 3 is controlled. For instance, when change-over time of main thyristors 301 and 302 and that of main thyristors 303 and 304 are staggered, an output waveform of intermittent square wave is obtained. By this the effective value is lowered, and load current is reduced by the amount and, at the same time, the upset current is controlled within the limit of fixed value and thus efficient flash butt welding can be performed.
