Abstract

PURPOSE:To constitute a bit extension circuit with its physical mechanism simplified using no gate circuits, by making use of a resister file composed of ordinary RAM used for an electronic digital computer in general. CONSTITUTION:This circuit is provided with RAMs 24 to 27 constituting the register file of upper bits and lower bits which has read, write and passing operation modes and a non-operation mode by the lower bits of the basic length equivalent to input-code numeric data, and numeral data with a code shorter than the basic word length is converted into numeric data with a code of the basic word length. By combining a ME signal and WE signal, the register file is set to write, read or passing operation mode or the non-operation mode and a code-bit extension indication signal is supplied to AND and OR gates 21 and 23; switching to the non-operation mode in which the output is zero when input code numeric data is zero is done and switching to the operation mode in which all-''1'' data written previously is read out when data is ''1'' to make upper bits ''1''.
