Abstract
PURPOSE: To detect the completion of the roasting of coffee beans and that of the cooling of the roasted coffee beans, by inserting a temperature-sensitive element into the beans under treatment.
CONSTITUTION: A coffee roaster which comprises (a) a rotary drum 2 for the roasting and cooling of coffee beans, having a number of perforations 22, (b) a heater 8 and a blower 11 placed under the drum 2, (c) a duct 10 furnished with a perforated plate 13 which can be opened or closed by an air-flow controller 12, (d) a temperature-sensitive element 5 attached to the door 7 of the drum 2 and inserted into the beans in the drum 2, (e) a temperature detector 6 connected to the temperature-sensitive element 5, (f) a switching element 9 inserted between said temperature detector 6, and said heater 8 and said air-flow controller 12. Air is heated with the heater 8 and sent to the drum 2 with the blower 11 to roast the beans in the drum 2. The end point of the roasting operation is determined by detecting the temperature rise of the beans by means of the temperature sensitive element 6, and the heater 8 is switched off by the switching element 9. The perforated plate 13 is opened by the action of the air-flow controller 12 to increase the air-flow. The end- point of the cooling of the beans is determined by the element 5, and the air-flow is stopped.
