Abstract

PURPOSE: To pressure-weld the thin-walled steel pipes with good accuracy by gas- heating the butt faying surfaces of the pipes to around the melting temperature, fusion-welding the pipes under suitable pressure then holding the faying surfaces at the forging temperature and pressing the same under suitable pressure.
CONSTITUTION: After pipes P1, P2 are so set to clamps 1, 2 that their butt portion comes to the intermediate of the both clamps 1, 2, the pipes P1, P2 are fixed to the clamps 1, 2 by operating hydraulic cylinders 5, 8, thence the pressure of the extent of not producing any deflection around the weld zone is appled to the faying surfaces by operating a pressing device A and the burner center of a heating device B is aligned to the butt faces, after which the faying surfaces are heated by the device B to around the melting temperature to fusion-bond the faying surfaces. Thence, while the temperature at the weld zone is being maintained at the forging temperature range, the weld zone is pressed by the pressure of the extent of not producing any deflection around the weld zone by the pressing device A.
