Abstract

PURPOSE: To perform good welding through a simple construction, by utilizing a transverse ultrasonic wave to obtain exact information on the nugget of welded members.
CONSTITUTION: When electrodes 3a, 3b are in pressural contact with welded members 1a, 1b, an oscillator 2a is excited to intermittently supply a transverse ultrasonic signal. Welding is started by a welding current control circuit 4. The energized parts of the welded members 1a, 1b are molten depending on a current and an energization time to extend nugget 14. The transmission of the transverse ultrasonic signal is reduced according as the nugget 14 is extended. When the nugget is completed, the ultrasonic wave is not altogether transmitted through the nugget and the output of a detector 9 disappears. As a result, the welding current control circuit 4 stops the supply of the welding current.
