Abstract

PURPOSE: To determine the binary-coding threshold value of a picture by simple hardware constitution by using the maximum and minimum values of the shade level of the picture and its shade histogram by paying attention to characteristics of the picture, i.e. a linear pattern.
CONSTITUTION: A multi-level video signal from a mesh point on an objective screen is inputted to decoder 1, which selects one output line to output logic "1". After video signals from all mesh points are inputted to decoder 1, the histogram of the shade level of the objective screen is formed in counter 1 or (n). From the histogram of respective shade levels, maximum-level detection circuit 3, minimum-level detection circuit 4 and valley-level detection circuit 5 detect maximum level Lmax, minimum level Lmin and valley level Lb respectively. On the basis of respective levels, a binary coding threshold value is determined and when the valley level is close to the mean value between the maximum and minimum levels, the binary coding threshold level is considered to be the valley level.
