Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain an efficient braking action, by reciprocating wedge members by pistons which project from both the ends of a cylinder and by lifting both the ends of an arc-shaped brake shoe and engaging the ends with a brake drum.
CONSTITUTION: An almost semicircular back plate 1 is so fixed on the unrotary member such as a knuckle of a suspension by a bolt inserted into a bolt hole 14 that the open end of a brake drum 11 is closed. An arm 5 is provided on the peripheral part of the back plate 1 so that the arm extends upward from the plate. The arm is lightly butted to one side of the web 9 of a brake shoe 3 to guide the web. A hydraulic cylinder 15 is secured on a base plate 1. Wedge members 2 are coupled to a pair of pistons protruded from both the ends of the cylinder 15. the wedge members 2 are caused to slide on the oblique faces 21 of guides 13 secured on the back plate 1. When the wedge members 2 are pushed out, both the ends of the shoe 3 are lifted into pressural contact with the inside surface of the drum 11 to apply a braking force.
