Abstract

PURPOSE: To reduce time required for backwash to a great extent and to protect cooling pipes against erosion, by preventing that the speed of cooling water flowing into cooling pipes of condenser exceeds a predetermined value while operating valves for effecting switching from normal wash to backwash or vice versa.
CONSTITUTION: In condenser 12, steam discharged from turbine 14 is cooled and condensed by cooling water such as sea water pumped up from intake port 10 by means of water circulating pump 9. Here, if cooling water is made to flow in condenser 12 in a fixed direction, for instance, in the direction of arrow 17, there is fear of cooling pipes 15 being closed at its inlet by foreign matters 16. Therefore, it is necessary to periodically change flowing direction of sea water flowing in cooling pipes 15. In changing the flowing direction of cooling water, closing of normal- wash outlet valve 7 of, for instance, condenser A is at first started and closing of inlet valve 3 is then started before said outlet valve 7 is completely closed. Subsequently, opening of backwash inlet valve 6 is started before valve 3 is completely closed, and then opening of outlet valve 1 is started for carrying out backwash before inlet valve 6 is completely closed.
