Abstract

PURPOSE: To enable high-accuracy insertion in the width of the slits of a code plate for the lattice pattern of an encoder, by setting a vernier relation between the code plate and sensor elements arrayed along the lattice pattern.
CONSTITUTION: An optical lattice code plate 1, which is provided with N transparent and opaque slits having a length of W and periodically arranged in the total length L of the plate, and a linear sensor 2 having a length of L and made of (N+ 1) photoelectric converters arranged in a spacing of P equal to W.N/(N+1) are juxtaposed with each other. The spacing of the slits of the code plate 1 is made different from that of the photoelectric converters of the linear sensor 2 so that a vernier relation is set between them. Rays of light transmitted through the code plate 1 are received by the linear sensor 2. An electric signal proportional to the quantity of the received light is picked out by clock pulses. The phase inversion point of the electric signal is detected to determine the relative displacement between the code plate 1 and the linear sensor 2.
