Abstract

PURPOSE: To make it possible to detect the reference position of a scale by means of a simple structure by placing a reference slit in a row of a measuring slits of a main scale and thereby forming a reference position detecting unit.
CONSTITUTION: Main scale 30 is provided with a row of measuring slits 32, and index scale 34 is provided with measuring gate slits 36 and 38, which are placed on top of the slits of main scale 30 for comparison. When both scales 34 and 30 make a relative motion, the amount of displacement is subjected to photoelectric conversion. On a part of the slit row 32 is formed reference position detecting unit 40 having a wide slit. On the other hand, index scale 34 is also provided with reference gate slit 42 corresponding to it. On the side of main scale 30 are provided light emitters 44, 46 and 48. On the side of index scale 34 are provided light receivers 50, 52 and 54 corresponding to these light emitters, and these light receivers forms a moving photoelectric converter fixed on the same base plate as index scale 34.
