Abstract

PURPOSE:To eliminate the need for a complicated process circuit and to enable to obtain a high resolution through the employment of an inner insertion method, by a method wherein a device is located so that a pitch of a light and dark pattern of a code plate is different from a pitch of a group of a group of linear sensors. CONSTITUTION:A light from a light source 3 illuminates a light and dark pattern of a code plate 1, and the light and dark pattern is projected onto a linear sensor 2. In this case, the pitch of the light and dark pattern is caused to slightly differ from a pitch of a group of sensors 2. The output of the sensor 2 generated resulting from the movement of a plate 1 is amplified (6) and is inputted to a signal distributor 8. The distributor 8 outputs a component of, for example, an element A to an SA terminal and an output of an element C to an SC terminal, and input them to envelope curve detectors 9 and 10, respectively. The outputs of the detectors 9 and 10 are compared with each other by means of coincidence pulse generator 11, and when the detectors 9 and 10 equalize in the outputs, a pulse is sent to stop counting of a counter 12. This causes the repeating change of the counting value of the counter 12 in proportion to the movement distance of the plate 1 and obtains resolution of an internal insertion due to a difference between the pattern of the plate 1 and the sensor 2.
