Abstract

PURPOSE: To restore the property of ion exchange membrane by a method wherein a cationic ion exchange membrane with sulphonic acid group and weak acid group of which electric resistance is raised by using is contacted with an aqueous alkali metal halide solution with a specific pH range.
CONSTITUTION: A cationic ion exchange membrane having a sulphonic acid group and an acid group weaker than the said sulphonic acid is immersed in an aqueous alkali metal halide solution with a concentration of about one normal - saturated point and sufficiently contacted by continuous or intermittent stirring or by exchanging the said solution. More preferably, within the above described solution, direct current electric amount corresponding to above 5 times of ion exchanging group amount within a membrane present in an electric current applied portion is applied to the surface to be treated from a substantially right-angled direction. This electric current applying method provides a benefit for shortening a time required to restore the capacity of said membrane.
