Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain an inexpensive electrochromic material which has long life and high uniformity, as well as usefulness for time piece, table calculator, television, etc., by forming an electrochromic oxide on the surface of base plate by decomposition of a specific metal alcoholate.
CONSTITUTION: A mixture of one or more of metal alcoholates of the formula M(OR)n (wherein M is W, Ti, Mo, Zr, Cr, Sr, Ca, Ba, or V, R is an organic group, e.g., alkyl, acyl, vinyl, phenyl group, etc., preferably a 1W8-carbon alkyl group, and n is valency of M) is coated on the surface of a base plate or electrode and then subjected to a hydrolysis or thermal decomposition (by the reactions of the reaction equations I and II) to form amorphous metal oxides. Also, the metal alcoholates of the formula M(OR)n can be synthesized by the reaction equations III and IV.
