Abstract

PURPOSE: To increase the resolution between reception echoes, by detecting abnormal phenomena depending on the failure present under the surface of measured object individually to detect the presence of failures within fine distance under the surface.
CONSTITUTION: The reflection echo of ultrasonic pulses reciprocating the front and rear surface of measured object 10 is picked up with the probe 14, the circuit 18 forms analog signal corresponding to the thickness from the time required for reciprocation of pulses and the signal is fed to the A/D converter 20 and the surface reflection wave detection circuit 26. Further, abnormal thickness is detected with the converter 20 and comparison circuit 22 to detect the presence of failure, and the greater pulse width than the specified value for the surface reflection echo can be detected with the circit 26, pulse width comparison circuit 28, and memory circuit 30. Each detection output operates the alarm circuit 34 via the OR circuit 32 to detect and display the failure 12 beneath the surface.
