Abstract

1377054 Sonic fuel level indicators FORD MOTOR CO Ltd 24 July 1973 35230/73 Heading H4D A motor vehicle has a system for indicating the level of fuel in a tank comprising a transducer mounted on the bottom or top of the tank and responsive to electrical signals to emit ultrasonic pulses into the tank, means for detecting the ultrasonic echo pulses reflected back from the fuel surface, a timing circuit for measuring the time lapse between the emission of an ultrasonic pulse and the detection of the corresponding echo pulse and display means responsive to the timing circuit to display a varible which increases or decreases in accordance with the measured time lapse as an indication of fuel level in the tank. Oscillator 12 operates ring counter 13 which provides outputs at 0, 10 and 95 counts. At 0 count, trigger 14 is operated and causes an ultrasonic pulse to be emitted from transducer 11. Receiver 16 is disabled until a count of 10 so that the trigger pulse is rejected and disabled at a count of 95 to reject echo pulses returning from the other side of the tank. An echo from fuel surface 19 is accepted by the receiver and passed to counter 17 which was started by the 0 count from counter 13. The counter is an up counter if the transducer 11 is mounted at the bottom of the tank and a down counter if the transducer is at the top. The count is passed to display 18 giving the fuel level.
