Abstract
PURPOSE: To prevent the lowering of the combined exhaust temperature and operate exhaust cleaning effectively by means of a three-element catalyst, by the method wherein a part of the heated air discharged from an idling exhaust manifold when a part of the cylinders are operated in the idle time is used as the suction air of the operating cylinders.
CONSTITUTION: When three cylinders are operated in the idle time, signal "L" from number of cylinders control circuit 35 is inputted to three-directional electromagnetic valve 39, and signal "L" from number of revolutions switch 45, which detects the condition of idling, is inputted to electromagnetic valves 41, 42; hence, paths M-N are connected. Consequently, air intake valve 30 and air return valve 32 are totally opened and exhaust return valve 32 is totally closed. By this, air of atmospheric pressure is drawn into idling suction manifold 22 and a part of the air discharged from idling exhaust manifold 26 is supplied to operating suction manifold 21. By this, the temperature of the exhaust gas discharged from the operating exhaust manifold is increased, and thereby the temperature of the combined exhaust can be increased.
