Abstract
PURPOSE: To develop the columnar crystal of weld metal in the material thickness direction and improve the ultrasonic flaw detection characteristic of weld zone by makigng the curvature of groove shape as small as possible and force-cooling the weld zone after welding of each one layer of build-up.
CONSTITUTION: In the shape of a commonly used U-form groove A, its groove angle α is approached to 0° as far as possible and its radius of curvature R is made smallest possible γ, whereby the groove shape B which is applicable to a welding method of less deposited metal amount in one welding of TIG welding or the like and of the curvature of the extent of not producing undeposition is provided. By using this groove B, the weld zone is force cooled during welding or after welding of each one layer of build-up. With this method, weld metal develops its columnar crystal in the plate thickness direction and in the case of selecting the specific ultrasonic wave incident angle, charging of ultrasonic waves becomes easy and the S/N at the flaw detection is improved. This method is applied to the portions requiring ultrasonic flaw detection of the weld zones of vessels and pipings such as of atomic power plants.
