Abstract

PURPOSE: To enhance the toughness of a high strength steel by raising the sol. Al content of the steel and minimizing the Si content to lower the embrittlement sensitivity of a weld bond zone in high heat input welding.
CONSTITUTION: The title steel cintains C 0.04W0.18%, Si<0.09%, Mn 0.60W 2.0%, sol. Al 0.03W0.10%, N2<0.012%, one or more out of O2 0.001W0.007%, V 0.02W0.10% and Nb 0.01W0.04%, one or more out of Cu<0.50%, Ni<1.0%, Mo<0.40% and Cr<0.50%, and Ti 0.005W0.05% and/or B 0.001W0.005%. Since the Si content is very low and the Al content is relatively high, Al dexidation is induced. Fine Al2O3 as a deoxidation product is stable at high temp., prevents austenite grains from coarsening owing to welding heat, promotes formation of fine ferrite, and enhances the impact performance of a high heat input weld bond zone.
