Abstract

PURPOSE: A mold of new kind of bacteria belonging to Streptomyces, Streptomyces melleochruseus, is employed to produce actinomycin D or S3 useful as carcinostatic substance.
CONSTITUTION: A new mold of Streptomyces melleochryseus, which is distinguished from Streptomyces bottropensis because it assimilate raffinose readily and shows more compact spirals of hyphae and from Streptomyces flaveolus because it does not assimilate xylose and the surface of spore is smooth, is cultured in an enriched medium and actinomycin D or S3 is collected from the culture mixture.
