Abstract

PURPOSE: To eliminate the need for a binder, to simplify a process of manufacture and to homogenize and stabilize a blank, by pressurizing, molding and baking spherical crystals using as raw material, and by graphitizing them at specified treatment temperatures.
CONSTITUTION: Meso-carbon micro-beads (spherical crystals) obtained by thermally treating petroleum system heavy quality oil and by fractionating mesophase small spheres formed by a solvent can be pressurized and molded without using a binder because they have a pitch-like element besides a carbon material-like element. The spherical crystals are employed as raw material, pressurized and molded without the binder and graphitized at the graphitization treatment temperatures t of 1900°C≤ t≤2800°C, preferably, at 2200°C≤t≤2500°C. Thus, a carbon brush that is extremly homogeneous and stable as a blank is obtained having stable contact with a commutator, etc. and excellent sliding characteristics can be acquired.
