Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare highly pure and optically active menthol in high yield, by the fractional crystallization of the reaction product of the (+)-methol acidic ester of optically active trans-1,2-cyclo-hexanedicarboxylic acid with benzylamine.
CONSTITUTION: Optically active (+)- or (-)- trans-1,2-cyclohexanedicarboxylic acid anhydride I, an optical resolution agent, is reacted with (±)-menthol II in the absence of a solbent or in the presence of an inert solvent, e.g. venzene, etc., to high temperature, to give the (±)-methyl ester of (-) or (+)-trans-1,2-cyclohexane- discarboxylic acid III, which is reacted with the equivalent amount of benzylamine to give the benzylamine salt of the acidic ester IV. The product is fracitonally crystallized with a solvent, e.g. water, methanol, etc., to separate the poorly soluble benzylamine salt IV, which is decomposed by an ordinary method to give optically active menthol.
USE: Perfumes, medicines, refrigerants, etc.
