Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain a high-performance fluorescent substance by heating a mixture of a Tb- or Pr-incorporated rare earth metal oxide, a mixture or conpound capable of producing an alkali metal sulfide when heated, and a F- or Cl-carrying compound.
CONSTITUTION: The objective fluorescent substance of formula I (Ln is one or more of the elements selected from Y, Gd, La, and Lu; A is Pr or Tb or both; X is F or Cl or both; x is a value satisfying the equation: 0.00003≤x≤0.2; the content of the X being 2W1,000ppm). This substance can be prepared by heating a mixture of (A) an oxide of the formula II or a compound capable of producing the oxide when heated, (B) a mixture or compound capable of producing an alkali metal sulfide when heated, and (C) a F- or Cl-carrying compound. The component (B) is, e.g., a mixture of an alkali carbonate and sulfur. The component (C) is, e.g., NaSO3F, NaCl. The heating temperature is preferably 900W1,400°C.
