Abstract

NEW MATERIAL:To provide a carboborate of formula I (where Ln is at least one element selected from IIIa group elements in the periodic table and rare earth elements).
EXAMPLE: Y2(BO2)2(CO3)2.5H2O.
USE: An anhydrous borate LnBO3 derived from the above carboborate is used as raw materials for LnAl3(BO3)4 and LnCr3(BO3)4 applicable to a piezo-electric material and a fluorescent substance.
PREPARATION: A carbonate of IIIa group or rare earth elements, e.g. Y2(CO3)3. 5.65H2O and boric acid H3BO3 are mixed in a molar ratio of 1:2, and water is added to the mixt. in an amt. less than the amt. of the mixt. to react them. By heating the resulsting hydrate carboborate, the following salts can be obtd. easily at amorphous or crystal state: partially dehydrated low hydrate salt, thoroughly dehydrated anhydrous salt, partially decarboxylated carboborate, and thoroughly dehydrated and decarboxylated anhydrous borate.
