Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare a hydrocarbon by the dehydration of methanol using an insoluble, nonvolatile, stable, long-life catalyst having extremely high acidity and composed of aluminum dihydrogen tripolyphosphate or its combination with other substande.
CONSTITUTION: A hydrocarbon is prepared by the dehydration of methanol using a catalyst containing aluminum dihydrogen tripolyphosphate (A). The compound A can be prepared by (1) mixing aluminum or an aluminum-containing substance (e.g. Al(OH)3) with a phosphoric acid-containing substance (e.g. 85% phosphoric acid) at a P2O5/Al2O3 molar ratio of 2W3, and (2) heating and crystallizing the mixture at 150W300°C. The compound A may be incorporated with aluminum oxide, bauxite, active charcoal, zeolite, etc. The metnanol is not necessarily anhydrous, and sufficiently high conversion can be attained even by using a 90W95% methanol.
