PURPOSE: To prepare the title compound useful as a synthetic intermediate of herbicides, in high yield, by the thermal rearrangement of di-(β-halogenoethyl) methylphosphonite under specific conditions.
CONSTITUTION: The compound of formula II, useful as a synthetic intermediate of a herbicide, γ-amino-γ-carboxypropyl-methylphosphinic acid ester, is prepared by heating a compound of formula I (X is halogen) in an inert gas stream, (pref. N2, He, etc.) in the presence of an organic solvent (pref. a solvent having a boiling point of ≥100°C, and free from -OH, -NH2, etc.) at 100W200°C, pref. 130W170°C.
