Abstract

PURPOSE: To prevent the flotation and effusion of sludge by adding Ca ion and an alcohol or a ketone as a hydrogen donor to waste water containing nitric acid ion and nitrous acid ion in the treatment of waste water thru activated sludge processing system.
CONSTITUTION: When waster wate containing great quantities of nitrogenous compounds, e.g., night soil, sewage, or nitric acid metal washing waste waters, is treated with activated sludge, nitric acid ion and nitrous acid ion are produced, and thus these are reduced by means of the metabolism of facltative anaerobic bscteria to harmless nitrogen gas which is discharged, where bacteria-containing sludge is floated with nitrogen gas bubbles floating in the waste water and effused. This phenomenon can be prevented by the addition of Ca ion a hydrogen donor, e.g., an alcohol or a ketone to saccharides, proteins, and fats in an amount less than theoretical amount required for denitrifying reactions. In this case, CaCO3 is separated out, the specific gravity of the sludge becomes greater, and the flotation and effusion of sludge with the nitrogen gas bubbles can be lessened.
