Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare a low-density copolymer of ethylene and butene-1, having excellent impact strength and useful as a hollow vessel, by the gas-phase polymerization of ethylene and butene-1 in the presence of a catalyst comprising a solid substance containing Mg, Ti, V, etc., and an organo-aluminum compound.
CONSTITUTION: A soft or semi-rigid copolymer of ethylene and butene-1, having a melt index of 0.01W10 and a density of 0.85W0.91, is obtained by copolymerizing ethylene and 8W60mol%, based on ethylene, of butene-1, in gas phase, in the presence of a catalyst comprising (A) a solid substance containing a solid inorganic compound containing Mg, e.g. MagCl2, and a titanium compound such as titanium tetrachloride and/or a vanadium compound such as vanadium tetrachloride, and (B) an organo-aluminum compound such as triethylaluminum.
