Abstract

PURPOSE: To separate oil and water by breaking an emulsion of petroleum product such as heavy oil which is in admixture with water and in the emulsified state.
CONSTITUTION: Heavy oil is introduced through a receiving nozzle 24 into a reservoir. Steam as a heating medium is supplied to a bottom heater 6. As the introduction of the heavy oil into the reservoir proceeds, the steam as the heating medium is supplied to side wall heaters according to the rising of the surface of the oil in order of the side wall heaters 10, 9, 8 and 7. When the heavy oil is introduced into the reservoir, the heary oil is heated and the temperature is risen by the heating of the bottom heater 6. When the oil is heated by the bottom heater 6, a convection takes place to rise the temperature and the oil is circulated slowly. When the heating of the bottom heater 6 is stopped, and only the heating of the side wall heaters 10, 9, 8 and 7 is continued, an inner oil layer is maintained at a temperature required for the breaking of the emulsion and the stored oil stands still. Several water droplets are joined together to form large-sized water drops. Water which becomes easy to precipitate, begins precipitating.
