Abstract
PURPOSE: To provide an oil seal, in which arrangement is such that thickness of fluid film on the sealing surface is thicker at the portion where contact pressure is high than at the portion where contact pressure is low, whereby it is enabled to increase the PV value and to reduce wear.
CONSTITUTION: Sealing surface 7 to be held in contact with the outer surface of shaft 3 is formed around the inner circumference of lip 6 of seal ring 5, and projections 8 fitted in a resilient ring 9 are formed on the outside of lip 6. Resultantly, contact pressure on the sealing surface is high at portions 10 located on the inside of projections 8 but low at portions 11 located between projections 8, which results in that thickness of fluid film is small at the portions 10 but large at portions 11. Therefore, as shaft 3 is turned, fluid at portions 11 is forced into portions 10 located on the inside of projections 8, so that pressure of fluid film is increased at the portions 10.
