Abstract

NEW MATERIAL:A DL-threo-2,3-dihydroxy-4-butanoic acid derivative of formula I: (R is ester residue).
EXAMPLE: Methyl DL-threo-2,3-dihydroxy-4-phenyl butanoate.
USE: An intermediate for the synthesis of Bestatin having a strong inhibitory action on aminopeptidase B, Leucine aminopeptidase and bleomycin hydrolase.
PROCESS: One mole of a trans-4-phenyl-2-butenoic acid derivative of formula II is converted into a cis-glycol, preferably in the presence of a solvent and about 0.01W 0.001 mole of osmium tetroxide and about 1.5W2.5 moles of an oxidizing agent, e.g. barium chlorate or hydrogen peroxide, to give the compound of formula I.
