Abstract

PURPOSE: Heavy metals and various organic materials are removed by adsorption by using adsobent of microporous oxide in which silica and titania are present in a specific weight ratio.
CONSTITUTION: An aqueous solution of soluble titanate such as titanium tetrachloride, titanium sulfate, etc. is adjusted by acid to a pH from about 0.1W4. The solution is then mixed with aqueous solution of soluble silicate such as meth and ortho sodium silicate or water glass. The mixed ratio of the aqueous solution of titanate and silicate is selected so that the quantities of silica and titania fall in a weight ratio ranging from 75:25 to 0:100 in the final composite product. The mixed solution is gradually hydrolyzed by urea, ammonia water, etc. allowing silica- titania gel to be precipitated. The deposited precipitate is filtered and dried thereby to provide a composite product. The resultant product is microporous oxide having a specific surface of 50m2/g or greater and exhibits excellent adsorbent performance.
