Abstract

PURPOSE: To prevent expensive extracting agent from wasteful consumption, a separator having a coagulator section filled with fibrous material and a separator section is used to separate and recover the extracting agent from aqueous suspension of the extracting agent.
CONSTITUTION: Aqueous suspension of extracting agent is produced in the solvent extraction process in a wet system metal refining. Such suspension is fed with pressure from the inlet port 1 to the coagulator section 2 filled with fibrous material 3 such as glass wool and polypropylene fibers. There, the extracting agent suspended as minute particles in water phase adheres on the surface of the fibrous material 3 and grows in size by mutual particle collision. The extracting agent, then, departs from the surface of the fibrous material 3, moves with the flow of water phase, and enters the separator 4. There, the extracting agent floats on the water phase and is recovered from the recovering section 5. Typically, the process is effective in recovering expensive extracting agent such as di-2-ethylhexyl phosphoric acid used in refining zinc, and contributes to natural source saving.
