Abstract

PURPOSE: To improve the strength of detecting element, while requiring not sintering treatment at a high temperature, and to reduce the breakage of the element and the slackness of an electrode thereby to reduce the dispersion in the performance of the element by forming the element with a porous binder layer on its whole surface.
CONSTITUTION: The material powders, which are prepared by pulverizing a metal oxide such as SnO2, ZnO or γ-Fe2O3, are molded into a shape, in which a platinum electorde 1 has its upper portion embedded, and then sntered at a temperature of 600 to 1200°C thereby to prepare a gas sensitive element 2. To the dispersion, in which binder layer forming particles such as SiO2 or AlO3 are dispersed in water, there is added a binder agent such as coloidal silica or alumina zol for binding binder layer forming particles. The gas sensitive element 2 is then dipped in the dispersion thus prepared and is dried. The element 2 is then baked at a temperature of 300 to 800°C, which is lower than the sintering temperature, thereby to prepare a binder layer 3. Thus, it is possible to produce a combustible gas detecting element A which is prepared by coating the gas sensitive element 2 with the porous layer 3.
