Abstract

PURPOSE: To enable performance of a temperature compensating function effectively in the wide range of temperature of the exhaust gas by applying vitreous coating on to the surface of a titania thermistor element for temperature compensation.
CONSTITUTION: A sensor element for detecting oxygen formed of a titania sintered body which is made to bear catalyst is connected in series with the thermistor element 2 for temperature compensation formed of a titania sintered boty with its surface coated 20 with vitreous material. This thermistor element 2 is prepared by a method wherein the titania sintered body prepared by embedding, for instance, two plutinum lead wires 4 and 5 in titania, molding this titania under pressure into a disc with diameter of 4mm and baking the same under the temperature of 1,200°C is coated with powdered slurry composed of SiO2 in 73%, A2O3 in 2.6%, MgO in 4.4%, Na2O in 15% and Zn in 5% and then is baked under the temperature of 1,100°C. In this way, the thermistor element made inactive to oxygen can be made to perform the temperature compensating function effectively in the wide range of temperature of exhaust gas.
