Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce the title seal material with superior airtightness and heat resistance by converting a surface layer of a grfaphite ring into SiC and filling pyrolytic carbon into the surface pores.
CONSTITUTION: A graphite ring is reacted with Si or Si-contg. gas to convert a 0.2W2.0mm thick surface layer of the ring into SiC, and the ring surface is finished to smoothness by lapping or other method. This ring is then heated to 600W2000°C in an atmosphere of gas of hydrocarbon such as benzene or methane, a high MW cpd. or the like to deposit above 10μ thick pyrolytic carbon on the surface, and a pyrolytic carbon layer adhered to the sliding surface is removed to obtain a SiC- coated graphite seal material with pyrolytic carbon filled in the surface pores.
