Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare a modified polyester having high heat resistance and elasticity, and useful as a raw material of film and fiber, by polymerizing the monomers of the polyester in the presence of a specific phenol compound.
CONSTITUTION: The objective modified polyester is prepared by polymerizing (A) terephthalic acid and (B) an alkylene glycol such as ethylene glycol, in the presence of (C) 5W60mol (based on 100 moles of the acid component) of a phenol compound of formula I (R is 1W6C alkyl; Ar is phenol residue) or of formula II (R' is H, 1W6C alkyl, etc.).
USE: The polymers containing 2W20 moles of the phenol compound is suitable to manufacture a film and fiber by orientation and crystallization, and those containing 20W60 moles of the phenol compound are amorphous resin having high glass transition temperature, and suitable to manufacture a sheet, etc.
