Abstract

PURPOSE: A Ge catalyst, an amine that is volatile at high temperatures, and a specific aromatic ether are added to esters of terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol and the polycondensation reaction is effected to produce a polyester which has the same high transparency as glass even in thick-wall products.
CONSTITUTION: To direct esterification products mainly from terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol are added a Ge catalyst as GeO2, a tertiary amine or quarternary ammonium salt evaporating below 280°C as tetrapropylammonium hydroxide and an ether of dihydric phenol of formula I (R is 1,4-phenylene, 1,3-phenylene, formula II or III; n is integral number of 2W6) as 1,4-bis(hydroxyethoxy)benzene and the polycondensation reaction is effected to produce said polyester. The amount of the Ge catalyst is 0.005W0.2, preferably 0.01W0.1mol% based on the total acid component, the amine is 0.2W2.0, preferably 0.3W1.0mol% based on the Ge catalyst and the compound of formula I is 0.05W50wt% based on the polymer produced.
