Abstract

PURPOSE: To make it possible to highly and accurately measure the diameter of a continuously running wire in an on-line contactless manner by using both a lens system having a remarkably shallow object depth and an image sensor.
CONSTITUTION: An image sensor 8 is disposed above a running wire 3 through a lens 7, which has its object depth set remarkably shallow, so that the image of the wire projected upon the light receiving surface of the sensor 8 is scanned in the radial direction thereof at a preset period. The output of the sensor 8 is converted into bright and dark binary signals at a slice level 10 by a comparator 9 and is counted for each scanning operation. The counted content corresponds to the wire diameter when the running line of the wire becomes coincident with a standard line P, i.e., when it is focused. As a result, the maximum of the counter 11 is consecutively held in a maximum holding circuit 13, and the maximum during a preset period is fed as the measured value of the wire diameter to a judging circuit 15 to judge whether it is within an allowable range or not. Thus, the diameter can be measured in an on-line manner.
