Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a starting material of clean fuels, synthetic resins, fertilizers, etc. from a gas containing H2 and C1W4 hydrocarbons, by treatment of said gas contiaining water with active alumina to convert COS to H2S which is removed in high yield.
CONSTITUTION: COS is removed from a mixture of H2 and C1W4 hydrocarbons in gas phase, using a substance having a fine multi-cellular structure which comprises Al oxide and Si oxide as main components (active alumina). Controlling the water content of said gas below saturation through the water-containing gas feed valve 1 and the dehydrated gas feed valve 2, the gas is led to the active alumina-packed column 6 via the preheater 3 and the meter 4, where the gas is reacted at normal temp. W100°C. The teatment converts COS to H2S which can be easily removed. The gas is led into the Zn oxide-packed column 8 or the alkali hydroxide packed column 9 to remove H2S.
