Abstract

PURPOSE: To make it possible to conduct the transmission of light information in a short period of time by achieving an efficient receipt and emission of light with a light-receiving element and a light-emitting element integrated in a single chip and by supplying light output corresponding to the received light information.
CONSTITUTION: An n- layer 2 is superposed to n+ layer 1 and a P+ layer 3 is embedded in the layer 2. The layer 3 is constitued by accumulating segments 311...322. An n+ main electrode 4 for the segments 411...422 is formed on the portin of the layer 3 surrounded by the segments. Further, a p layer 5 is superposeed so that electrodes 1',5' having windows corresponding to respective segments are formed. As the light is applied from the same side as the n+ layer 1, the accumulating segments 311...322 samples the optical image applied thereto in the same manner as a matrix and accumulate it after a conversion into electric signals. As voltage is successively applied to the electrodes 1',5', the layers 1,2,3,4 act as photodiodes in the light-receiving mode, while the layers 4,5 act as LED in the light-emitting mode, thereby to emit the light corresponding to the amount of light received.
