Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare L-MPGA useful as a fungicide and a herbicide, by the optical resolution of racemic N-acyl-MPGA into a mixture of L-MPGA and N-acyl-D- MPGA using a bacterium acylase as a resolving agent.
CONSTITUTION: N-Acyl-D,L-2-amino-4-methyl-phosphinobutyric acid of formula (R is halogen-substituted or non-substituted acyl group) is treated with cells of bacteria belonging to Pseudomonus genus, e.g. Pseudomonus maltophilia BN-233, or treated product thereof, at pH 6W8 and 20W50°C, to afford a mixture of L-2- amino-4-methyl-phosphinobutyric acid and N-acyl-D-amino-4-methyl-phosphinobutyric acid. After removing the cells or the treated product, the reaction liquid is passed through a strongly acidic resin column to separate the unreacted N-acyl- D-MPGA. The adsorbed L-MPGA which is positive to ninhydrin reaction, is eluted with water, and purified.
