Abstract

PURPOSE: To convert a heavy oil containing large amounts of asphaltene and vanadium into a light oil free from asphaltene and heavy metals and pitch containing small amount of sulfur and heavy metals, by hydrogenating the heavy oil in the presence of a magnesium silicate catalsyt, and heat treating the product.
CONSTITUTION: A heavy hydrocarbon oil containing large amounts of asphaltene and vanadium, is hydrogenated in the presence of a magnesium silicate catalyst such as sepiolite, attapulgite, etc., at 350W450°C, under a pressure of 30W250 kg/cm2G, at an H/oil ratio of 100W2000 Nl/l, and a residence time of 10 min.W5 hours. The reactio product oil is heated at 350W550°C and a residence time of 10 min. W5 hours, under atmospheric pressure to 50 kg/cm2G, to obtain a large amount of light oil containing little asphaltene and heavy metals, and high quality pitch having small H/C ratio and containing small amount of sulfur and heavy metals and a large amount of a component which is insoluble in heptane and soluble in quinoline.
