Abstract

PURPOSE: To reduce a pressure rise which occurs when a pump is started, by placing an air suction pipe for sucking air out of a pump and a discharge pipe, in a position slightly lower than that of the uppermost part of the discharge pipe to leave an appropriate quantity of air in the upper part of the discharge pipe.
CONSTITUTION: When a pump 1 is to be started, a discharge valve 4 is entirely closed and a vacuum pump 8 is driven so that air is sucked out of a discharge pipe 3 and water is conducted into the pump 1 and the discharge pipe 3 through a suction pipe 2. Since an air suction pipe 5 is laid in a position slightly lower than that of the uppermost part of the discharge pipe 3, air remains in the discharge pipe between its uppermost part and the air suction pipe 5. As a result, a water fullness detector 6 produces a water fullness detection signal to start the pump as the air remains in the discharge pipe. An abnormal pressure rise can be prevented by the buffer action of the remaining air.
