Abstract

PURPOSE:To prevent the fusion-bonding defect of optical fibers and their deformation by providing a mask between a heater which releases heat rays and the support part placed with the optical fibers thereby limiting the region where the optical fibers are heated. CONSTITUTION:Optical fibers 1a, 1b are placed in alignment, each one on the two support tables 21, 22 which are cut with V-grooves. The support tables 21, 22 have protrusions 21a, 22a. The connecting part 2 in heated through the clearance part between these by a platinum wire heater 4, whereby the fusion-bonding of the fibers is done. The quantity of heat is adjusted by adjusting the position of the heater by a moving table. Since the adjustment of the quantity of heat and the limitation of the heating region may be readily performed, the fusion-bonding defect and deformation of the fibers may be prevented.
