NEW MATERIAL:A compound shown by the formula I (R is WOH or =O).
EXAMPLE: 2,3-Anhydro-5-dioxy-5-C-(1'-hept-2',5'-trans, trans-dienyl)-D-ribo-pentofuranose).
USE: A synthetic intermediate for various organic compounds. Especially an intermediate for cerulenin having antifungal and antimicrobial activity.
PROCESS: A novel compound shown by the formula II (Ms is methanesulfonyl) is reacted with a base, e.g., sodium methoxide, in a solvent, e.g., THF, at 0°CWroom temperatures for 30 minutesWtwo hours and epoxidized to give a compound shown by the formula I wherein R is OH. This compound is oxidized with an oxidizing agent, e.g., pyridinium chlorochromate in a solvent, e.g., CH2Cl2, at 0°CWroom temperature for 2W5hrs to give the compound shown by the formula I wherein R is 0.
