Abstract

PURPOSE: An oxime that is readily obtained from a ketone and hydroxylamine are heated together with hydrogen chloride in acetice acid to produce readily title compound useful as intermediate of medicine and chemicals for photography with simple operations in high yield.
CONSTITUTION: An oxime of formula I (R1 is alkyl; R2 is halogen, hydroxyl, acyloxy, alkyl, alkoxy, nitro, cyano, carboxyl, phenyl; n is 0W4) such as 2,4'- dihydroxyacetophenone oxime is dissolved in acetic acid and hydrogen chloride gas is introduced into the solution to produce a benzoxazole derivative of formula II such as 2-methyl-6-hydroxybenzoxazole. The compound of formula I is obtained by the reaction of the corresponding ketone with hydroxylamine. This process also can be applied to the case where a 2,5-dihydroxyacetophenone derivative is used as a starting material.
