Abstract
PURPOSE:To increase the dynamic range in the structure of a small number of bits and then reduce greatly the time required for the conversion, by separating the bits after conversion into the mantissa and exponent parts and then showing the digital value in the form of the exponent square of (mantissa X 2). CONSTITUTION:Variable amplifier 2 is controlled to the amplification factor corresponding to the exponent to be set, and then amplifies the input signal. The output of amplifier 2 is compared 5 with the reference level, and down-counter 4 sets the optimum exponent in accordance with the above comparison result. In this case, the output of amplifier 2 is converted into the digital signal through A/D converting circuit 1, and then the output of circuit 1 is used for the mantissa part and combined with the exponent to obtain the digital conversion output. Thus the dynamic range can be increased in the structure of a small number of bits, and then the time required for the conversion can be reduced greatly.
