Abstract

PURPOSE: To prevent the phosphorus poisoning of a catalyst for cleaning the exhaust gas of automobile and also the lowering of the function of the catalyst support, by a method in which more than a specific amount of ZnO is impregnated into a support whose surface is composed of activated alumina and then a noble metal catalyst component is coated on the surface of the support.
CONSTITUTION: More than 0.05g/1g of support of ZnO is impregnated into a support of which at least the surface is composed of activated alumina and then the surface is covered with a noble metal catalyst component. Thus, when oxides, e.g., ZnO, P2O5, etc., formed in the combustion of engine oil are adhered to the surfaces of said catalyst, the diffusion of ZnO adhered to the surfaces into the support can be greatly prevented by means of ZnO impregnated in advance into the support, resulting in the enhancement of the ratio of ZnO to P2O5 on the surfaces of the catalyst as well as the prevention of the vitrification of P2O5, or the posioning by phosphorus of the catalyst.
